Hmmm a nice Very Special Old Pale (VSOP).
Seriously, it is up to you. It will definitely keep once opened. Best advice if you do this, keep it in a cool, dry, dark place. Liquor differs from wine due to the higher relative alcohol content. It will degrade on openening, but not so much that you or I would notice. 40% (plus abv's - alcohol by volume) will keep for a number of years after opening.
It really depends on how good your friends are and how much you want to drink. But my advice, with winter besetting us - save it!
